Athlete Profiles

Athlete Profile – Nate Harper

1. Name, age? Nathaniel Harper III, 21image6

2. Where did you grow up? Columbia, S.C. born and raised

3. How long have you been doing CrossFit? I started doing CrossFit consistently since July. I would do a WOD here and there with a buddy of mine that is really into it.

4. What was your athletic background before CrossFit?  I wrestled and played baseball and football in high school. I also wrestled in college for 3 years.

5. What do you do when you are not at Crossfit Wappoo? (occupation, hobbies, etc.)? II’m at School(The Citadel), or hanging out with my buddies. I don’t really have too many hobbies outside of working out. I like doing anything I can compete against someone, video games, spike ball, ping pong; anything. I’m also a part of the Charleston Campus Outreach Community.

image26. How did you find out about CrossFit? One of my friends at school is real big into it and he knew I loved trying anything fitness related so I did a few WOD’s with him.

7. When did you realize CrossFit is right for you? Probably after I got back from OCS this summer. I knew to have a successful career in the Marine Corps I couldn’t just lift or just do cardio I needed a combination that would improve my muscular endurance, and plus I was tired of just conventional lifting it gets boring after a while.

8. What is your favorite WOD/movement? I’m not the best at them but I think Ring muscle ups are just fun; anything squatting front or back, and favorite WOD probably Murph because its challenging but won’t kill you, and it was the first WOD I ever did.

9. What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
Thrusters or wall balls I hate them both equallyimage4

10. What would your perfect WOD look like? Something with front squats, pull ups and a run or double unders.

11. What is one thing you have done at Crossfit Wappoo that you never thought you would do? I snatched 185 back in October I didn’t think I would be able to do that as early as I did. My goal was to hit it by February.

12. What motivates you during a CrossFit WOD? Just getting it over with or competing with the people I am working out with.

image3

15. What has been your favorite moment since joining? Probably hanging out with everybody at the one year celebration.

16. What is something about yourself that we might not know? I wish I had some special talent or something to talk about but I don’t, unless eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts is considered a talent; I’m pretty good at that. My favorite bible Verse is Jerimiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It helps to remind me that plans for my life itself are out of my control and that my purpose on earth is only for Gods plans and his glorification and however he image5wants to use me.

17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? on’t rush into learning different lifts and movements focus on the technique of each one and take your time learning.

Athelete Profile – Gina Jones

FB_IMG_14416608961501. Name, age? Gina Jones, 28

2. Where did you grow up? Kentucky and North Carolina

3. How long have you been doing CrossFit? 9Since April or May, I can’t really remember, but once I started I was hooked

4. What was your athletic background before CrossFit?  I played intramural sports like flag football and softball and worked out on a regular basis.

5. When did you become a member at CrossFit Wappoo?
About two weeks after my first intro class in spring

6. What made you join CrossFit Wappoo? I felt stronger and challenged after every workout. I had always lifted, but was getting bored with the same routine. I looked into programs at my old gym but they wanted to charge an astronomical price for high intensity training. CrossFit focuses my aggression while working out. I also enjoy the competitive aspect of the WODs.

IMG_71617. What do you do when you are not at Crossfit Wappoo? (occupation, hobbies, etc.)? I work as a surgical assistant for an oral surgeon downtown. When I’m not at work, or at the gym, I enjoy spending time with my two dogs and my boyfriend. Any outdoor activity has my name all over it. I love camping, kayaking, and anything related to the water.

8. How did you find out about CrossFit? I met Keane and Laura at last year’s dragon boat races. They told me how close the gym was to me and told me to come check it out. I was always a little intimidated by the idea of CrossFit, but I love the small family feel of CrossFit Wappoo.

9. When did you realize CrossFit is right for you? When I started to see results faster than anything else I had tried in the past. My muscle tone and strength improved vastly over a few short months. I loved it!

FB_IMG_144821598842010. What is your favorite WOD/movement? Not sure I have a favorite WOD, but I do enjoy working on my pull ups. It took me a while, but I can now kip with my pull ups so I don’t have to use a band. I can’t do it for a full WOD but it’s progress. I also love squats!

11. What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
I hate running. I’m not good at it, and I get nothing from it except exhaustion. I’m also frustrated by double unders. I’m trying, but I can’t get it. It’s annoying when there are a lot in a WOD and I already know I can’t hit it.

12. What would your perfect WOD look like? Whitney is really good at making up WODs for us and we did one a few weeks ago that I loved. It was a mix of pull ups, ab mats, hand stand push ups, and ring dips. My arms were about to explode. Maybe a version of that with some legs worked in.

FB_IMG_144821445029513. What is one thing you have done at Crossfit Wappoo that you never thought you would do? I never thought I would be able to increase my squat weight. I remember in college squatting 125 and thinking it was a lot. I hope to keep improving.

14. What motivates you during a CrossFit WOD? Everything in my outside life that causes stress. I use working out to channel my frustrations. So if I had a bad day, i just take it out on the weights and leave it at the gym. It helps keep the rest of my life balanced.

15. What has been your favorite moment since joining? I really enjoyed the first girls night we had at Taco Boy. It was nice to get to know everyone a little better outside the gym.

FB_IMG_144821410396216. What is something about yourself that we might not know? I’m a pretty good shot and my favorite gun is an AR-15. The first time I shot a gun, the hot shell fell into my shirt and I waved my loaded pistol around the range, trying to get it to fall out. It left a mark and I scared the crap out of everyone in that place.

17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? Don’t be too hard on yourself and just try. No one else is watching to see you fail. Everyone wants to help, so don’t worry about how you look. Anything else you want to add? Nope :)

Athlete Profile – Wally Renne

IMG_25431. Name, age? Wally Renne, 34

2. Where did you grow up? Pawleys Island SC

3. How long have you been doing CrossFit? 9 Months

4. What was your athletic background before CrossFit?  I have always been active in sports, Soccer was my favorite (See Pic) I also lifted 5 times a week at a “regular” gym but only worked chest and biceps

IMG_23095. When did you become a member at CrossFit Wappoo?
February, 2015

6. What made you join CrossFit Wappoo? I thought I was in excellent physical shape, working out 5 days a week and stuff but I really was in terrible shape…I was not doing functional fitness and my mobility was terrible. I think the turning point for me that made me realize I was in terrible shape was when I went on a long hiking trip with a 50lb backpack in the mountains of Linville North Carolina. My older brother came and he had been doing crossfit for 2 years. He basically had to carry my pack up the mountain because I was dying from pure exhaustion, It was so embarrassing and when he got to the top after about 14 miles and high elevation climbs he was not even tired. I realized what little muscles I had were worthless and fake that could not do anything in the real world and a zero cardio because I never pushed myself, I didn’t have coaches and the community like Crossfit Wappoo has.

7. What do you do when you are not at Crossfit Wappoo? (occupation, hobbies, etc.)? I am a professor at MUSC, a dentist, a scientist, an inventor and a business owner.
For fun I like to…. Lift heavy heavy weights. And I love to spend lots and lots of time with my beautiful wife and awesome little girl.

IMG_24698. How did you find out about CrossFit? My brother had been trying to get me to go for years.

9. When did you realize CrossFit is right for you? The very first WOD I was able to RX…Annie. It had been about a month since I joined. Keane finally let me Rx something. I was about to die and quit and go home I think I was 20 minutes into Annie and I was on my last 10 sit-ups and Keane was in my face yelling at me at like level 10 volume “Up, Down, Up Down” Threatening my life if I was to stop! I needed that…I still need that with my weak mind. Everyone else was encouraging me and cheering me on, it was awesome! Now I can do it in 7 minutes and probably 6 if Keane is there. I love the motivation from the group, from the excellent coaches. You just don’t get that anywhere else.

IMG_230910. What is your favorite WOD/movement? I love Squat Cleans. It combines my two favorite movements into one.

11. What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
Anything that involves putting weight over my head.

12. What would your perfect WOD look like?
Skill: Back Squat 3x3x3x3x3+
AMRAP 12 minutes
5 Squat Cleans
30 Double Unders
5 Dead Lifts
30 abmat sit-ups

13. What is one thing you have done at Crossfit Wappoo that you never thought you would do? Make so many great friends

IMG_216714. What motivates you during a CrossFit WOD? I need to be screamed at. If it were up to me I would quit every single WOD mid way through. I think the coaches and the amazing crew that come to workout motivate me.

15. What has been your favorite moment since joining? I think it was a Saturday a few months ago when I got my first muscle up. Everyone at the Gym had been helping me and I finally nailed one. Everyone cheered me on. It was awesome. The people and coaches are awesome; they seem to really care and are always willing to spend the time to help.

soccer16. What is something about yourself that we might not know? I used to have dreads, and was kind of a rebel.

17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? Ask Keane to yell at you during your WODs. No seriously the nice thing is you have no pressure to do heavy weight. Work on form first, scale back until you have the movements down.

Athlete Profile – Robin Hall

1. Name, age? Robin Hall, 33IMG_5766

2. Where did you grow up? I grew up in 2 cities, Greenville, SC and Augusta, Ga. Each of them means a lot to me for different reasons.

3. How long have you been doing CrossFit? Just hit my 1-year mark!!

4. What was your athletic background before CrossFit?  I played every sport I could find in high school. I played basketball, ran cross country, ran track, threw the discus and the shotput, and lifted weights. After high school, I continued running, did several 5k, a couple 10ks and 1 half marathon (never again!).

IMG_57615. When did you become a member at CrossFit Wappoo?
When we opened, last October, pregnant and all.

6. What made you join CrossFit Wappoo? I found Laura on the internet one day while I was researching, Crossfit gym and personal trainers close to me. I was so ready for a change, and knew I wasn’t going to make it happen at Gold’s gym or with P90x. I started working out with Laura, and when they opened the gym, I knew I HAD to join!!

7. What do you do when you are not at Crossfit Wappoo? (occupation, hobbies, etc.)? Being a mom of 4, hobbies outside of Crossfit and lifting don’t really exist. It is the one major thing I do for myself. Otherwise, I am

Images from a Daily WOD session at Wappoo Crossfit on James Island near Charleston, South Carolina with Keane and Laura Steele

shuttling kids to practices, games and fieldtrips, or doing housework (glamorous I know!).

8. How did you find out about CrossFit? When I was a single mom, about 7 years ago, my roommate’s boyfriend was doing Crossfit. Shortly after that she started, I wanted to so so so bad, but I was a full time student with 2 kids, the time constraints and financial restraints just didn’t allow for it. So I spent the next few years, doing her metcons at home. I stalked gyms everywhere, until I came to a point in my life where I could fit it in.

IMG_57659. When did you realize CrossFit is right for you? I knew immediately! When I found out they were doing Olympic lifts and incorporating them into cardio work, I knew I would never want to do anything else. .

10. What is your favorite WOD/movement? Anything with a squat in it. Wall balls, thrusters, front squat, over-head squat. Etc. Probably because I am halfway decent at them.

11. What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
Burpees, when I was pregnant they took SO much effort. They are growing on me though!

12. What would your perfect WOD look like? Anything I can win!! So it would probably need to IMG_4308incorporate a barbell, and some wall balls!

13. What is one thing you have done at Crossfit Wappoo that you never thought you would do? There isn’t much I don’t think I CAN do, I kinda think I can do anything with enough practice. This seems simple but I never thought I would do a hand stand against the wall, being upside down makes me so nervous! But I can do it now, just don’t ask me to do the pushup part! (I hope to be able to write pull-up in this spot next go round!)

14. What motivates you during a CrossFit WOD? Beating my last time on that WOD, and the comradery of my classmates.

IMG_122315. What has been your favorite moment since joining? There are too many to list! Beating my fight gone bad reps, competing in powerlifting, getting my first double under, PRing my clean like it was nothing, finally getting on the pull up bar (even if it was with bands). I don’t think I can pick one!

16. What is something about yourself that we might not know? I knit, and I love crafting gifts for people. I’m also a pretty good cook, or so I am told!

17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? Listen to your coaches!FullSizeRenderThey are there to help you, and their success is measured by your success. They don’t want to hold you back; they want you to improve every day. They know what they are talking about, usually!

18. Anything else you would like to add? Keep coming back and you will see results in more ways than you can imagine! Your performance will get better, and your body will change!

15. What has been your favorite moment since joining? Nothing in particular stands out, I’m usually happy every morning after I survive a WOD.

16. What is something about yourself that we might not know? I am a competitive person with myself and I get that from my dad who’s been my running partner since I started running in middle school.

17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? I would tell them not to be intimidated and concentrate on form first before you start going all out on workouts.

IMG_23406. What made you join CrossFit Wappoo? I first came in when they had a free workout with my friend Lauren. She and I worked out at the Air Force base, but I was looking for something more outside of that. I joined shortly after.

I lost 70 pounds after deciding I wasn’t comfortable with myself and could do more after hearing about others who ran marathons and did triathlons. 17. What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit? Do not be intimidated. Despite how it can look from the outside, the community as a whole is awesome.

1. Where are you from, how did you end up in Charleston, and what areas have you lived?steven

I grew up in Matthews, NC and moved to Charleston for dental school about 3 years ago. I went to Erskine College in the middle of nowhere in the upstate as well.

2. How old are you and what is your occupation?

26, and a lifetime student. I am finally in my last year of school ever. Soon I will be a dentist!

3. What is your athletic background, if any?

I grew up playing baseball and basketball mostly, some golf and a lot of ultimate Frisbee in my free time. I played baseball in college

steven14. How did you find CrossFit and when, what lead you to it, and what keeps you coming back?

I did my first crossfit workout in 2007 when my best friend’s family opened a crossfit gym right after we graduated from high school, and I was there every summer and winter break throughout college. I keep coming back because it gives me something competitive in my life and I always find weaknesses to work on and that my strengths continue to improve. And honestly, it is just fun to get to do some of the things we do.

5. What are your favorite and least favorite movements and/or workouts?

I love overhead squats and rope climbs, so the more the merrier. Double unders too.
I HATE sumo deadlift high pull. I don’t even have a good reason, but it is absolutely hands down my least favorite movement in life. Also, an 800m prowler push was the worst workout I have ever ever ever done.

6. What are your CrossFit strengths and weaknesses?steven

Strengths: anything involving squats or jumping
Weaknesses: Shoulder to Overhead, push-ups, rowing

7. What do you enjoy most about coaching?

Seeing people do things they never thought they would be able to, and just continually seeing everyone improving. Getting that first pull-up ever, or finishing a workout that seemed impossible once upon a time is awesome to watch. It’s rewarding to see the athlete come out in people.

8. What would you tell someone who was on the fence about joining or coming in for fundamentals?

steven3I dare you to try.  You will probably surprise yourself with what you are capable of, and it is not as crazy as you might think. You will be so glad that you did!

9. What are your favorite out of gym activities/hobbies?

Eating, drinking coffee

10. Do you have any unique talents, funny story, or a favorite joke you would like to share?

Nahhhh
